Two Questions on Getting Experience Through Internships and Volunteering

From the Career Q&A with the Library People blog: http://www.lisjobs.com/CareerQA_blog/

Excellent tips for combining volunteer/intern experine with you education to find a job!

….An internship is a great way to start off your career change, without a major commitment or stress from job hunting and interviewing. It is also an excellent way to network with people in the profession, discover the ins and outs of working in libraries, find mentors, and possibly even secure a job down the road.

Internships can be very valuable and rewarding, and may even provide you with more relevant experience than a library job would provide. It will help if you know what kind of experience you need – this could be very specific or quite broad (especially if you’ve never worked in libraries)…

Musical Instrument Museum Seeks Library Intern

Friends of SIRLS: An internship opportunity!

The Musical Instrument Museum, based in Tempe and while our building in North Phoenix is under construction, would like to identify students who might interested in internships to help set up MIM’s library and archives. We have several staff members who have library and archives backgrounds, including myself, who will supervise this process.  We are open to proposals regarding time commitment and can work with the university if credit could be arranged.

We have a rapidly growing library with no order currently imposed, and currently our archive consists of two collections that need to be processed.  One collection is 7 linear feet of records from Henry Steinway (of piano fame); the other is about 25 linear feet of documents and photographs related to the Fiske Museum at Claremont University Colleges, whose collection we have recently acquired.

Could you either circulate this to your Phoenix-area associates? These projects would probably be best for someone with some practical experience in library cataloging and principals of archival arrangement and creating finding aids.

My contact info, as well as a link to MIM’s website, is below.

Kind regards,

Sharon Aponte Misdea
