Great Networking at Thursday’s Job & Internship Fair!

I am sorry more Phoenix SIRLS students did not take advantage of the “fair” last night at the Carnegie Center. It was a wonderful opportunity to network with librarians working in a great variety of settings:  public (Scottsdale, Phoenix, Glendale, and more), academic (ASU, UA, Grand Canyon and Maricopa community colleges), special (art, archives, genealogy, history, and more).  I enjoyed meeting Karen Bell for the first time!  And I loved meeting some SIRLS students I had not met and seeing others who come to our Friends Gatherings.

Being there gave me many good ideas and contacts for planning future meetings.  For example, the librarians at the Phoenix Art Museam and the Archives are happy to host meetings and provide a speaker!  Also talked to Scottsdale PL and Glendale PL who are interested!  I will  be contacting these folks to set up time with them!

Please remember to take  advantage of any opportunity to meet librarians and mingle. One never knows when that mingling will pay off!! Thanks, Karen, and Richard of the State Library or organizing the event!

Wonderful Meeting Last Night!

Many, MANY thanks to Ann Roselle who provided a wonderful overview and many excellent tps for those of us in the job seeking process.  We viewed and critiqued the good, the bad, and the ugly in resumes and CVs.   We also discussed the distinction between the two.

Here are Ann’s slides!    cover-letter-resume-tips

And, regarding the differences between CVs and resumes:  according to About.COM, the differences between a CV and a resume are:

  • the length
  • what is included and
  • what each is used for

A resume is

  • a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education.
  • brief and concise – no more than a page or two

A Curriculum Vitae is

  • a longer (at least two page) and more detailed synopsis.
  • includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details.

In the United States, a curriculum vitae is used primarily when applying for academic, education, scientific or research positions. It is also applicable when applying for fellowships or grants.

Other comments on this topic are found at: http://www.lisjobs.com/career_trends/?p=107

Thanks, also to all who provided snacks, especially to Ed Van Winkle who co-authored the talk, introduced Ann and also provided great munchies!

We will plan to meet again next month! The 4th Tuesday is November 25. Will that work for y’all? We are contemplating a visit to a prison library service, and will let you know details later! Thanks very much for  your attendance and enthusiastic participation!

Tuesday’s Friends of SIRLS Gathering Report…

15 members attended our first gathering of the academic year last night a the College of Medicine-Phoenix Library and I was thrilled to welcome and meet you all!  We had several lively and most interesting conversations and concluded the following:

  1. We want to continue meeting on a monthly basis.
  2. Tuesdays are OK, but not the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
  3. This location was good for this month’s attendees.
  4. We do want to organize tours of different types of libraries.
  5. We want to organize sharing sessions to discuss the experience of, or “a day in the life of” different types of libraries. We had represented last night: school, academic, non-profit special, prison, and more, and decided it would be good to have informal presentations from each other.
  6. We do want to arrange for outside speakers, e.g. a library HR specialist to discuss hiring and selection policies, as well as how to prepare an intriging resume and  cover letter.
  7. …there is much more and I will share it once I have had a chance to study your survey responses.

Thanks to you all for your enthusiasm and attendence.  See you next month, perhaps October 21?! Check and mark your calendars and let me know!

Best, Jacque D.

Attendees:  Alex Roland, Monica Johnson, Betty Murphy, Ed Van Winkle, Noah Richman, Judy Shappee, Olga Casarez, Rosemarie Downing, Lisa Hintze, Toni Janas, Kathi Knox, Bonnie Braun, Rebecca Wilson, Candice Bairn, Camille Easterday

Tuesday, September 9 is First Phoenix Friends of SIRLS gathering

Based on feedback I have received from y’all, and with apologies for whom this date is impossible, I have schedule our first gathering for Tuesday, September 9, after 6 pm, at 550 E Van Buren*, Phoenix, 85004. Please mark your calendars and tell friends and colleagues who may not be on the listserv!

  • I will have snacks and beverages at 6 pm and we will convene around 6 :30-6:45. We will wrap at 8:30 pm!
  • Please consider coming and bringing your ideas, questions, challenges and successes to share. Also, please bring your calendars and/or PDAs so we can schedule future meetings. The lovely rooms at PPL are fully booked through September so rather than delay, I decided to host the meeting here to get us started.
  • We are between 5th and 7th Streets on Van Buren, across the street from The Arizona Center on the west and the ASU Mercado on the south. If you want to come early, please do and we can organize a tour of the campus if you are interested. We will be in room 1252 which is in Bldg 1 (aka the 550 or PUHS Domestic Sciences Building) on the 2nd floor. Please enter the building via the ramp on the east side. I will meet you there as the building is locked.
  • *Parking is available in the lot along 7th Street, and after 5 there is no charge. (See map.) I will alert Security that you will be here. If there is a game and charges are being levied for game-goers, tell the person that you are attending a meeting in the Library in Bldg 1. Print this notice and place it on your dash! There are parking meters along 5th Street, too. See more info at:  http://www.medicine.arizona.edu/facilities/Phoenix/parking.cfm

  1. Tuesday, Sept 9
  2. Wednesday, Sept 10
  3. Wednesday, Sept 17
  4. Wednesday, Sept 24

 Many thanks.  JDD

Conclusions and goals based on survey results…

Okay, I have some direction and ideas. What I am concluding you would like is:

  1. Email communication, but not TOO often, and including links to the blog.
  2. Meetings held not too early in the evening, but early enough to not make it a long night and drive home, say, 6:30 or so.
  3. Occasional meetings over a meal or snacks
  4. Meetings held at rotating locations around the valley and/or in central or downtown Phoenix.
  5. Informal presentations and facilitated networking sessions.
  6. Desired topics are wide-spread but to include choosing a library setting and developing a career path.

I will work to set up some gatherings. It appears that days and times should vary as well, as it will be impossible to get everyone what is good for everyone all the time!

So, please don’t wait for me to survey you again. If you:

  1. would like to speak on a topic that interests you,
  2. would like to facilitate a discussion on such a topic
  3. have a guest you would like to bring or suggest, or
  4. have a specific discussion topic or speaker to suggest…

Call or email me when the spirit moves you! I am at 602-827-2031 and email: jddoyle@email.arizona.edu
