Teacher-librarians are needed more than ever…

from Judith Comfort

Teacher-librarians are needed more than ever.

Open Access has exploded online and captured the imagination of librarians, scholars, and students on a global scale. But how much of this has filtered down to school-age children?

Open room design has made us challenge our most profound practices – what did we say this room was for?

National Library Week, Judith Krug & OBOB’s Own Librarian Hero

from Our Bodies Ourselves:  http://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/

library_journal_movers_and_April 12-18 is National Library Week — “an annual celebration of the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians.”

While this is obviously a great time to think about all the resources libraries offer, for young people and adults, and to thank librarians for the services they provide, I’m going to turn the focus on a librarian who works right here: co-blogger Rachel Walden.

And, what’s more, she was recently named one of Library Journal’s Movers &…see link above for whole post!!

Interested in archives? Three Intern/Volunteer oportunities in Phoenix!

Banner Good Samaritan Library & Archives has an extensive historical archive of photographs and other memorabilia that has a basic organization but is now in need of updating and digitization. Contact Sally Harvey at 602-239-4353 if you are interested.

The UA College of Medicine in partnership with ASU has had historical collections back to 1992 and this is the time to get them organized for the future.  Contact Jacque Doyle at 602-827-2031.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold is the world’s largest publicly traded copper company.  The following unpaid internship is for summer or fall of 2009 in downtown Phoenix:  Opportunity to assist with the inventory of archival and record materials for one of Arizona’s oldest copper companies.  The project consists of performing an inventory of the company’s Corporate Records vault, which contains a mix of contracts, records destruction documentation, historical ledgers, archived historical Phelps Dodge photos, and much more.  The project also includes cleanup of an Access-based archives database for transfer to the Corporate Records Department’s TRIM records database, and possible assistance with the inventory of historical materials (maps, deeds, films, etc.) stored in an offsite vault.  This is an excellent chance to work with some really cool old stuff!   Contact: Maryanne Siek, 602-366-8001, maryanne_siek@fmi.com

Also, she is remembered at: http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6651093.html

I recall hearing of her when I was in grad school, and that was a LONG time ago.  She took our profession to new heights, for sure.  And I am glad for it!

Not-really-news: College grads face worst job market in years…

aleqm5izchxdwpm1ilc9vp7xdb4dlqrt_g1By JUSTIN POPE in Google News…

…For many college students in the class of 2009, the post-graduation job hunt has turned into a quest for a rewarding Plan B — or in many cases Plan C or D…. Now students are being forced to cast a wider net. Considering they will change jobs three times on average within five years of graduation, they may someday be grateful they developed good job-search skills now.

Life is full of peaks and troughs.”… Read entire post at http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hjFIYEryF7MPthQi2Te2Jn7nJEHAD97AGQ800
